Class Picking Guide and Tier List for Classic (2024)

Good evening all. I decided to make a class selection guide and a general tier list for classic to assist others on deciding which class to play. I know we all have different opinions, and I tried to take a general overview for each class with that in mind.

Tier lists change with each expansion, and I do plan to edit this with tier lists all the way to PoP.

Update:

I'm updating to also include Kunark info since the TLP leak through test calendar shows the server might start with Kunark launch!

Bard: Thinking of Bard? Your main role is to provide short term buffs, mob control and a dash of pulling. You are a support class that nearly everyone wants for the utility. You don't do much on your own and you have a lot of activity. Some you can automate with /melody, but you will have to plan out your songs beforehand based on your group composition. The neat thing about Bard is that you are still useful even if you're afk. Just stand around your group with /melody going and let them know you will be right back. Once you get a taste of Selo's speed, you won't want to play any other class. Raids might get a bit boring. Your Epic is absolutely a game changer!

Cleric: Thinking of Cleric? You are the defacto healer. Everyone wants you in their group. Every guild will beg you to join. There are never enough Clerics. You keep the group alive and you provide invaluable rezzes to assist when a death happens. You can dps a bit when you're fighting undead, but your main task 95% of the time will be to heal. You won't ever have to really go LFG. All you have to do is say hello when logging into the game and your guild or random people will literally send you a tell asking to join them. You won't have to wait over a minute if you do post /lfg. Make a friend with an Enchanter for Clarity. You have the absolute BEST Epic clicky.

Druid: Thinking of Druid? You do everything. You can dps, heal, buff, solo, teleport and anything else you want. Hold on though, you're out of mana. You will be extremely busy providing buffs and have a lot of downtime. You can make a lot of platinum as a Druid as people tip for buffs and ports. While you are popular as a healer, you aren't as popular as the other 2 healing classes. Make a friend with an Enchanter for Clarity. Your Epic is 'ok'. Nowhere near as game changing as others since it's just a damage clicky.

Enchanter: Thinking of Enchanter? You are the boss. The alpha and omega. Everyone wants you more than anything. You provide the top 2 most important buffs in the game, Haste and Clarity. You provide massive dps with charm pet. You provide huge safety with crowd control. You can lock down 20 mobs at once. You are control. Don't get overconfident though, charm will break at the worst time and wipe your group if you aren't careful. Your Epic is 'ok'. Nowhere near as game changing as others since it's just a buff clicky.

Magician: Thinking of Magician? You are a dps machine. You create little robots that you send out to demolish mobs. Your pets provide great damage with the ability to tank on their own. You have similar nukes as a wizard as well. You do great in a group, but suffer a bit in raids as your damage is severely nerfed. You are a caster, so you have better quality of life than melee. Make a friend with an Enchanter for Clarity. Your Epic is a beast of a pet, and it's extremely useful in groups. Not so much in raids since MOTM debuff nerfs pets a LOT

Monk: Thinking of Monk? You are a martial arts master that's delegated to pull mobs to your group. Is your group fighting something already? Go back out and find more. Soandso tells you, "Keep pulling". You do amazing dps and will top the charts for years to come. You don't require weapons to do massive damage. This makes gearing up much easier than other melee. Be careful with your weight. You lose defense the heavier you are. You are apart of the pull team in raids, and you will learn the arts of feigning death. You can solo a bit with mend and your defensive ability, but you do much better in a group. Your Epic provides godly damage. It's the single best Epic for strict DPS and it turns you into the Hulk.

Necromancer: Thinking of Necro? You are the master of groups. The one above all. You see that group of 6 over in the corner? You are as good as them. You do massive damage with your spells and pet. You are the king of solo play. You mold the world around you as you have the tools to deal with every situation. Your damage is second to one (Enchanter's charm) in groups. You have near infinite mana and health. A well played Necromancer is one of the strongest classes in solo, groups and raids. This is an extremely active class, and you won't get bored playing it. By the way, you don't become a true Necromancer until you kill yourself when you go afk. Your Epic is 'ok'. Nowhere near as game changing as others since it's just a damage/snare clicky.

Paladin: Thinking of Paladin? You are the knight in shining armor! The princess (or prince!) needs your help to rescue them from these dangerous lands. You are a tank, the mix of a Cleric and Warrior. You smite all that is unholy. Your immortal enemies are Shadow Knights. The light guides you to play this class. (Something has to as you are at the lower end of the totem pole.) You have great threat and 'ok' heals. No one can sway your vote. Luckily, the game is filled with undead mobs. Your Epic is 'ok'. Nowhere near as game changing as others since it's just a damage proc.

Ranger: Thinking of Ranger? Just make sure to create a character with the name Legolasxx, Legomyego, xAragornx or something similar to fit right in with the other Rangers out there. On a more serious note, you do great damage for a hybrid. You melee, cast spells and shoot arrows if that's your fancy. You can tank in a pinch as well. Learn to love the RangerGate spell. Your Epic gives a great damage boost, a slow and 40% haste! You get 2 swords with it.

Rogue: Thinking of Rogue? You must be more edgy than the necromancer players as playing a Rogue is rough. You do 1 thing and 1 thing only, damage. You stab and fight to get to the back of the mob. When you can't get to the back, you complain at the tank to position better. Your damage is amazing once you get your Epic. You will absolutely have to maximize your character in every way to do similar damage as other classes, but hey, at least you're a rogue! LFG life can be rough, but stick with it as it gets better next expansion. You will tell yourself that for the life of EQ. (Serious note, it does get better each expansion, but it's always rough). Your Epic makes your life in Kunark. It grants you so much damage, and it's one of the easiest to get! It also provides Haste!

Shadow Knight: Thinking of Shadow Knight? You are a tank. A mix of a Warrior and Necromancer. You are amazing in groups and raids. Your snap agro is great. The Necromancer in you keeps you busy and healthy. You are the avatar of unholy. Your enemies (Paladins) cower as they bask in your glory. You do some damage, but you will need to sit to gain mana back. Make a friend with an Enchanter for Clarity. Your Epic is 'ok'. Nowhere near as game changing as others since it's just a damage proc.

Shaman: Thinking of Shaman? Everything a Druid does, you do better (except ports). Seriously, not joking, but you are wayyy more active than a Druid as well. You buff, nuke, dot, buff, heal, buff some more, cannibalize to regain mana, buff again, toss a heal, rebuff and on and on. Your damage is great, your heals are great and you will need 20 tell windows to deal with all the melee asking for your buffs. Make a friend with an Enchanter for Clarity. Your Epic is 'ok'. Nowhere near as game changing as others since it's just a damage clicky.

Warrior: Thinking of Warrior? You are the tank. That's what you are. Shout it loud and proud! I AM THE TANK!! You will be sacrificed in raids to prevent the big bad from stomping on the squishies behind you. You are the frontline, the warrior, the strong. Look at your muscles! You don't need a pesky shield. Dual Wield is the life for you. You better be dedicated to EQ and your guild as most will require near 100% attendance to hand you loot. Your Epic is what every Warrior needs. It's 2 weapons that can combine into a 2hander. It provides a massive threat proc to help with tanking. Absolute must have.

Wizard: Thinking of Wizard? You are the nukage, the meteor, the fires from hell, the freeze from death. You deal damage and you do it well. Your entire game is to manage 2 things, threat/agro and mana. If you have 100% mana, you are doing it wrong. If you have 0% mana you are useless. If you are dead from over nuking, you are useless. Your life is a balance. Don't worry, it's worth it if you do it well. You do some of the best damage in the game. Learn to live and love your rain nukes. Oh, you can also teleport around for fast travel and some platinum. Make a friend with an Enchanter for Clarity. Your Epic is 'ok' to equip, but you don't want to use the clicky much as it provides a ton of agro. It's more of a stat stick.
