How To Discover Your Gifts & Talents - Awakened Zen (2024)

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.’ ”
Erma Bombeck

Do you know that you have a gift?

There’s something special that you need to share with us. There’s a problem out there and your life’s the solution.

Each and every one of us has some talent for doing something. Like it’s hardwired into you. And you can do this something better than anyone else you know. A thing that if you were allowed to, you would do it all day long.

In truth we all have multiple talents and gifts. Key skills that if honed, practised and perfected would transform not only ourselves but the whole world around us.

Life is supercharged by people who are living it fully. The people alive with passion and purpose inspire us all.

Take a look at the wise words of cancer therapists Carl and Stephanie Simonton, “You must stop and reassess your priorities and values. You must be willing to be yourself, not what people want you to be because you think that’s the only way you can get love. You can no longer be dishonest. You are now at a point where if you truly want to live, you have to be who you are.”

We have to be who we are.

That’s the key.

That’s the solution.

Some people may say that thinking this way is selfish. That these type of thoughts are self-centered. And they’re right. This way of living your life puts tremendous emphasis on the self. The big difference is the realization that the better you become the better the world becomes.

We’re all connected to each other. Living our lives within the divine matrix of existence. As my resonant frequency improves I inspire others to do the same. The more that I allow myself to feel joy and happiness the greater the signal that I send out into life. Influencing others in a positive and helpful way.

Discovering Your Talents & Gifts

We all want to feel good. We all want to be happy. We all want to be doing things in our lives that make us feel great. When we’re feeling happy we enter into the slipstream of life. Things seem to flow easily, people are drawn into our lives to help us accomplish our goals, and we tap into an infinite energy supply that sustains and propels us throughout the day.

Everyone is unique. Everyone has a special something that they love to do and are good at. If you don’t believe me just take a look at a large family.

Each and every person within that family is their own unique expression of the ultimate source of life. Each person has their own likes and dislikes. Each of them has their own limitations and strengths. Each of them, though part of a large and growing family, knows that what makes them happy isn’t exactly the same as what brings joy to the rest of the group.

They all can agree that they love to feel happy. That’s universal between them all. But how they express that happiness is unique to each and every one of them. Johny sings, Mary dances, Jane organizes volunteers, Martin loves fixing computers, Rachel feels called to help women.

Each and every one of these family members has something special that they’re good at. Something that they love to do. Something that may seem separate from the others but in truth helps to contribute to the whole of life.

We’re no different than the family in this example.

We all have gifts and talents that are unique to us. When we express those gifts we feel good. As we find ways to live a life using these gifts and talents we contribute to our society and help to make the world a better place.

What Is A Gift or Talent?

A gift and talent is something that you’re not only good at, but it’s something that you have a desire to do. When you’re using that gift you’re filled with joy and power.

Sometimes we may discover that we have some skill at something but when we do it we’re miserable.

Guess what, that’s not your gift or talent.

It may be a skill that you can use to accomplish your goals but it’s not a gift or talent that should be developed, nurtured or explored.

If it brings you no joy and drains your life energy while doing it then it’s not one of your gifts and talents. So do everything that you can to stop doing it.

How To Identify A Gift or Talent

  • You can do it or learn it easily
  • You feel strong when you do it
  • It comes naturally to you
  • It brings joy to you and others
  • You look forward to doing it
  • You feel like you’re “in the zone” when you do it
  • Time seems to fly when you’re doing it
  • After you’ve expressed your talent you feel fulfilled
  • After you’ve expressed a talent you look forward to doing it again

Talent Defined

So what is a talent or gift? How can we identify them? The Merriam-Webster online dictionary says that a talent is:

  • a characteristic feature, aptitude, or disposition of a person
  • the natural endowments of a person
  • a special often athletic, creative, or artistic aptitude

It also says that a gift is something that is a notable capacity, talent or endowment. A gift is something that is voluntarily transferred by one person to another.

So we can see that our talents and gifts are natural and personal. There’s not just a chosen few of us who are the fortunate ones and are blessed with them. Each and every one of us has a gift to express. And finally, these gifts or talents are there so that we may share them with each other and all the world.

Let’s go and discover yours…

“Hide not your talents. They for use were made.
What’s a sundial in the shade?”

Benjamin Franklin

Do you know what your talents are? Do you have an intuitive knowledge of what gifts you possess that need to be shared with the world? Have you glimpsed the tremendous power that sleeps inside of you and yearns to be expressed?

If not it’s time to discover them now.

Think about and begin to list all the things that you love to do. Is it writing, cooking, or managing? Is it coaching, bookkeeping, or connecting with people? Is it supporting, creating, or organizing?

My talents and gifts are writing, speaking in public, connecting with others easily, and building-developing systems. These are my talents and gifts. Whenever I express them and use them in harmony with my Intuitive Insight, which is Inspiration, I feel totally alive and filled with joy.

If you’re still having trouble please stick to it. Here are a couple of things that you can do:

  • Commit to discovering your talents and gifts
  • Trust that you do actually have a talent or gift to share with the world
  • Call or email some friends and family and ask them what they think your natural talents and gifts are. You may be surprised by their keen insights.

Think of those moments in your life when you felt most alive, most filled with joy, where purpose seemed to propel you forward and you completely lost track of yourself. When space and time dissolved into nothingness.

If nothing’s coming to you on your own I think the best way to start the ball rolling is to ask your friends and family for some help. Oftentimes it’s the outside observer that has the clearest view of our lives. Why not ask them to share their wisdom with you.

Ask them, “What do you think my natural talents and gifts are?”
