What to do with empty welding tanks? ›

Refillable cylinders should always be returned to the supplier for recycling. Given there's often a deposit on refillable cylinders it makes sound sense to return them. Disposable cylinders, by their very nature, should be disposed of, but they need to be disposed of responsibly.

Filling with water is an easy way to empty the tank of vapours. A gas purge afterwards would be advisable. I wouldn't use nitrogen as it's not inert and will make a mess of your welds.

The process of welding gas or diesel tanks can be extremely dangerous. There is the possibility of igniting fuel vapors, and if the welder is using the welding process of MIG or TIG inside a fuel storage tank, they are in danger of suffocating from fumes if argon gas is used.

Fuel tanks can be and are routinely weld as necessary, so long as the tank is properly cleaned prior to beginning the job. BUT it's generally cheaper to replace a gasoline tank from a car or truck than it is to do a proper and safe job of welding it, following best safety practices.

Non-reactive gas mixtures are normally filled in steel cylinders and typically have a shelf life of about 3 years. In some cases, a higher concentration of a reactive gas can have a longer shelf life than a lower concentration.
