Ingredients For Easy Homemade Waffles

This recipe is easy to make and uses everyday ingredients you most likely already have on hand in your pantry:

  • baking powder – to make your waffles nice and fluffy.
  • eggs – I like to use large, good-quality eggs.

  • vanilla – Madagascar vanilla gives you the best flavor

How do you keep homemade waffles from getting soggy? ›

Make Sure Your Waffle Iron Is Hot

The outer crust will immediately begin to set and crisp. Moisture in the batter quickly turns to steam and evaporates out the sides of the pan. If the iron isn't hot, none of this happens and the waffles will be soggy and squishy.

Should you let waffle batter rest? ›

Recommended overnight or 2 hr resting – for the tastiest waffles, rest the batter overnight in the fridge or for at least 2 hours. This makes the flour grains absorb the liquid so it makes the inside of the waffles softer.

What makes waffles taste better? ›

Vanilla Extract

The addition of vanilla will bring depth of flavor and touch of sweetness to the waffles, without adding any extra sugar. To get the vanilla levels just right, you should use a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract for every 4-5 waffles. Double it if you're making a batch of 8-10.

What does adding an egg to waffle mix do? ›

Egg: Adds tenderness and provides structure. See our tips in the recipe for making even lighter, fluffier waffles by whipping the egg white (totally optional).

What is the difference between a Belgian waffle and a regular waffle? ›

Belgian waffles are usually thicker than their American counterparts. These Belgian beauties are made with a recipe that includes yeasted batter and crunchy pearl sugar. Belgian waffles have extra-deep pockets—the better for filling with butter, jam, maple syrup, or whipped cream.

Should I use milk instead of water in waffle mix? ›

Instead of water, you can use whole milk to make your waffles extra rich. Typically, for one batch of waffles, you'll need 1 cup of water for every 1 cup of classic pancake mix. A couple of large brown eggs will also help your waffles have the perfect fluffy interior.

Why won't my waffles get crispy? ›

Not waiting until the iron heats up properly means your waffles will cook, but never achieve that satisfyingly crisp exterior. Overworking the batter will leave your waffles dense and chewy instead of light and airy. And stacking even the most perfect waffles will cause them to become soggy and limp in minutes.

How to get crispy waffles in a waffle maker? ›

Pour the batter into a preheated waffle maker and cook for about 3-4 minutes. Enjoy! Note: If the waffles don't get crispy enough in your waffle iron, place them on a rack set on a baking sheet (or it can be the rack in the oven if it's clean) and bake in a 250F oven for another 5-10 minutes, until crisp.

Why are my waffles not fluffy? ›

Making pancake and waffle batter ahead of time is a huge no-no and will lead to flat, dense results every time. Even letting your batter hang out for just a few minutes after you've mixed it before you start ladling it onto the griddle will lead to less fluffy results.

Why are restaurant waffles so good? ›

An undeniable element of technique is involved in the flipping, timing, and surgical extraction of delicate waffles from the teeth of the iron. It also takes an experienced hand to not cram too much batter into the iron or underfill and end up with a thin, lackluster puck.

Why do restaurant waffles taste different? ›

While the griddles themselves likely vary from one diner chain to the next, diners are pretty much all working with a waffle iron or griddle that's already hot. IHOP, for instance, requires its pans to be heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and uses Crisco instead of butter to grease it, says Grimm.

Why do Belgian waffles taste so good? ›

The secret ingredient in Belgian waffles is the pearl sugar, which gives the waffles a unique texture and slight, satisfying crunch. Belgian waffles are also fantastically light, which adds to their perfection. Fun bonus fact: traditional Belgian waffles are usually eaten with your hands, not a fork and knife.

Why are my waffles not light and fluffy? ›

Making pancake and waffle batter ahead of time is a huge no-no and will lead to flat, dense results every time. Even letting your batter hang out for just a few minutes after you've mixed it before you start ladling it onto the griddle will lead to less fluffy results.

Why don't my waffles get crispy? ›

Use a hot griddle or waffle iron: Make sure your griddle or waffle iron is hot before adding the batter. This will help create a crispy crust on the outside while allowing the inside to cook evenly. Don't overcrowd the griddle or waffle iron: Give each pancake or waffle enough space to cook without touching each other.
